Basel's the only one I've been to and it just seems like the kinda place rich people go to spend money on crap, although there is a huge erotica hypermarket just round the corner from the main ground!

Exactly!
We´ve been to Basel, Zürich and Luzern out of the big cities and it´s plain crazy:
A decent steak in a normal restaurant is at least twice as expensive as in Germany and tourist life like hotels, camping, transport etc. is more expensive in general.
Once you get out of the big cities it is a bit cheaper, but really not much.
This is why we have taken Basle out of the equation and replaced it with a camp in Sempach.
We have visited various locations in Switzerland and the most promising is Sarnen, because it´s directly at a lake which was packed with locals doing all kind of things like playing football or beach volleyball, kayaking, fishing and of course swimming, bathing or just lying lazily in the sun.
There are various supermarkets and pubs within walking distance.
The connections are perfect as well:
There is a train station 500m from the camping area where trains will take you to Luzern in about 20min several times an hour.
From there it is under an hour to Zürich, just over an hour to Basel and Bern and about 3 hours to Genf.
By car it takes about the same, although Basel and Genf might be reached easier because you don´t have to go through Luzern.
The negotiations with the campings are still in a very early stage but it´s looking good and we hopefully will have everything wrapped up until the end of August and will be able to release the official website with more infos.
I´ll post developments here.

Here are the promised pics of Sarnen, which seems to be the most popular option:
Part of the campground with the lake in the background:
The train station which is 15min by foot away:
The football and beach volleyball fields next to the camping:

Olten has been taken out of the equation because of uncooperative officials.

There are more than 30 pubs and restaurants of all kinds in the both towns surrounding the camp.
I´ll make a graphic and post it later.
It´s not sure we are doing it there.
Some places in Austria look very promising as well.

excellent, wherever you end up building the camp food and drink will be most important [smilie=food-smiley-015.gif]
That was my only negative with the world cup camping site the lack of local shops etc.

This one is the of the campground(black), city, highway and train station with cash points,
big supermarkets and bars.
Some of them are overlapping or covered by other items:
And this one is of the city center of Sarnen with restaurants, bars and coffee bars(hot swiss chocolate: mhhh):
There are more smaller ones that are not shown on this map and in the other town in the opposite direction.

We have secured the field and buildings(with additional proper toilets and washing rooms) between the cash point and the "Militärstrasse".

 Post subject: Sarnen still possible?
Hey guys,
just found your site and looked arround. verry interesting.
how about sarnen? wasn't it sarnen that was "the new waterworld" this summer? i mean, wasn't the half village under water? would be a verry nice place, but seems to be a risky one as well.
was it you guys that made the camp in dortmund? a collegue was there and he knew a lot good things to tell about it (the worldcupcamp or so...).
...and be carefull with camping sites close to the swiss lakes. sometimes it can get more than just a little bit wet.
wish you a dry june 2008.

You must be mixing it up with another place.
We´ve been there in July and everything was great.
The weather was perfect and lots of visitors enjoying the atmosphere.

We did Worldcupcamp but it was close to Frankfurt and not in Dortmund.
